Sage Advice
A sage bit of advice is contained in a rebuke delivered to no less a personage than William Jeffers, head of the Union Pacific Railway, by one of his employees.
Jeffers was traveling in his official car. At a certain stop, the engineer dismounted from his cab and came into the president's car and asked him a question concerning some details of their immediate route. Being preoccupied with some papers before him, Jeffers absently gave an obviously erroreous reply. Angrily the engineer snorted, "That doesn't make any sense. Don't ever get so busy that you haven't time to think." Whereupon he turned and strode back to the cab.

GOOD BUY CANDIDATES
BEST OF ALL WORLDS
Today was a great day in the LEAPS arena, and I had some comments I wanted to share. It's funny how the LEAPS account can drop significantly on down days, and when that happens, I worry and fret because it can drop very quickly with LEAPS., But, I fight off my bad mood and do what the AIM model tells me and pick up bargains. It's still hard to watch your portfolio drop, even though you know you are snapping up cheap LEAPS left and right! But, when days like today occur, and your LEAPS portfolio - with the dozens of cheap LEAPS you've been accumulating on those depressing days - shoots up to a new high with no effort whatsoever, it makes it all worthwhile. Your AIM alarms go off, sending you into a selling frenzy, and you know you are following the correct program, accumulating cash in preparation for the next disappointing drop. Yet, it is these drops that make the money for you...AIM forces you to accumulate cheap LEAPS while you stare at your depressing account balance, then BOOM! A big up day, and those cheap LEAPS shoot you into the stratosphere! (Sent to me by a fellow AIM investor)
CLOSED-END FUNDS
BEST OF ALL WORLDS
I post a nice Closed-End fund newsletter on my web site every month and you should read it - just posted the December 2006 issue - my web site is http://www.jjjinvesting.com Closed-End funds continue to be a great source of profits from a very conservative investment that is professionally managed. Here is this month's fund - Turkish Fund - High - 30.30 Low - 14.40 - Current - 17.63, pays a 8.1% dividend. - Hey, Turkish Fund is up to $19.53 a month later! I give you good advice!

BOOK REVIEW
Options for the Stock Investor
By James B. Bittman
This book is a clear, concise, and practical guide to making option strategies part of your long-term investment program. Based on the author's popular seminars that have instructed and inspired thousands of investors, Options for the Stock Investor will help you learn how to use options safely and effectively, then teach you to integrate options into a long-term investment program. Although misconceptions about options abound, and negative media coverage has caused many conservative investors to close their minds to the invest-oriented uses of options, the fact is that options can be an important and strategic component of a well-balanced portfolio. This book shows you how.

The Best Ones The Philosopher
More Idiot Wave
I thought I'd give Tom a little more room since the Market is a little volatile and Tom always puts it in good prospective.
Week of 12/11/2006
We had a slight wiggle in the Value Line P/E this last week which gave us a small amount of relief. Not enough to reduce Relative Valuation to being Neutral, but at least it's not rising for now. Also, there was a bit of a breather in the 13 Week Treasury Note rate this week. 4.999% was the coupon rate as of last week. This is the first time under 5% since mid October. How does this look?
We still need either interest rates to ease or P/E to drop (or both) to get this measure back to more normal levels.
I've become interested in an idea relative to what is pushing the markets ever higher with such a broad effort. Last week there were 1312 New 52 Week Highs and only 98 New Lows when we add up the NYSE and NASDAQ totals. Could it be the massive number of "Index Funds" that is driving this? Index funds buy stocks because they're part of the "index" not on any selective basis. So, these index funds are buying the "bad" along with the "good." This allows for very little differentiation based upon company performance. The Index Phenomenon is also helping me to understand such a broad move without seeing a spike in Speculation.
I'm going to be reviewing the data for the Speculation component from around 2000 to present and see if there's a difference from historical norms. If measurable I might adjust the bullish and bearish cross-overs to account for the change.
The Divergence component is bullish (but also the most fickle of the components) for now indicating that a large majority of market participants are feeling certain about the market direction being "up." We'll keep our eyes open here and weigh the most fickle component against the least. My concern is that we'll see the opposite of the usual "January Effect" this year. With the best of this economic cycle's earnings growth behind us it might not be very pretty during reporting season in the first quarter of 2007.

Here is a new portfolio I just started for a new investor. Some are his stocks, some are mine. I think this is a good portfolio to add as it reflects exactly the kind of stocks I like. The stocks are now worth $139,061. The stocks are up 3% this month. UP 23% overall. They started at $113,219 - made adjustments for sales of Am Power Conversion and Keytronics - made good profits on both.
